BYAFA Results Week 9

Bath Cardinals 28 v 12 Handforth Hammerheads

The rookie West Country boys became the first English team to qualify for this year's playoffs when they completed a perfect divisional season. The Cardinals took an early lead when quarterback Mike Cotrell hit Tom Wiltshire in the end zone and Tom Evans kicked the conversion. With star quarterback Rik Hennessey sidelined with a broken finger Handforth hit back when stand in Stuart Hay sneaked in from one yard out to leave the score at 8 - 6.

Hay was again on the score sheet in the second period, this time on the defensive side of the ball when he intercepted and sprinted a little over twenty yards to give the Hammerheads a four point lead. With a little under a minute of the half remaining Tom Evans took a fifteen yard reverse in for a score to leave the game evenly balanced at 14 - 12 in favour of Bath.

Handforth seemed to have the better of the exchanges in the third, but could not find a way to break down a resolute Cardinal defense. So the game continued in the fourth with the Hammerheads being foiled on all four of their attempts from the Bath five-yard line. Regaining possession the Cardinals marched down field and Evans again burst into the end zone on a repeat of the reverse. Steve Leonard booted the extra two points to give Bath a little breathing space. As the clock wound down Evans notched up his third score on yet another reverse from thirty-two yards out and seal home field advantage for the English leg of the BYAFA championships.

North Lanarkshire Rams 26 v 32 Clyde Valley Hawks

This was a repeat of last years Scottish Championship game and proved to be just as close as its predecessor. Both teams went into this game unbeaten and it was the Rams who struck the first blow. Wallace latched onto a twenty-six yard pass to given them a 6 - 0 lead. The Hawks were quick to reply when Nelson sprinted half the length of the pitch and with extra two point kick being successful they strode into an 8 - 6 advantage. With the first period coming to an end Donaldson struck back, bursting into the end zone from five yards out and giving North Lanarkshire a narrow 12 - 8 edge.

The second quarter belonged to Clyde Valley, with Nelson rushing in firstly from thirty and then from five yards out. Both two point kicks split the uprights as last year's champions stretched themselves into a 24 - 12 lead.

The Rams came out fighting in the third and were not to be out done. Wallace held onto a thirty-yard touchdown pass, but once again the Rams failed to convert the extra points. As the game moved into the fourth Wallace slashed his way in once more from six yards out and with Gall holding onto to the two point pass the Rams were back in a 26 -24 lead. The Hawks though proved why they are Scotland's premier outfit when Moran sped in from the fifty, with the conversion again being good. The victory virtually secures the Hawks a playoff berth, with the Rams still favourites to meet them in the Championship game once again.

Moray Firth Dolphins 0 v Inverclyde Sharks 32

The Sharks were rewarded for their long trek up to Inverness with a surprisingly emphatic victory over the Dolphins. James McIlroy set them on their way with a sack in the end zone for their first two points. Alan Parker then extended the lead when he outpaced the Dolphin defense from seventy yards out to extend the lead to 8 - 0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Darren Banks sprinted in from almost eighty yards to stretch the Sharks lead with Parker kicking the extra points. On their next drive quarterback Richard Campbell teamed up with Parker from twenty-six yards to give Inverclyde a comfortable 22 - 0 advantage at the half.

As in previous games the Dolphins defense finally found their feet and battled bravely throughout the third to prevent any further score. Inverclyde's Gary Clark muscled his way in from two yards out in the fourth with Parker slashing in for the extra two. Campbell then hit Darren Banks from fourteen yards for a further touchdown with Martin McAlonan adding the extra two for the final points of the afternoon.
