Glasgow Tigers 8 v 26 North Lanarkshire Rams
With no games in England the spotlight was turned fully onto the big two in Scotland this week with both the Rams and Clyde Valley Hawks maintaining their unbeaten records and heading for next weeks match up against each other.
The Rams breezed into an early lead during the first quarter when Adam Donaldson sped in from sixty yards out to open their account. With the extra two-point attempt failing the Rams held onto a 6 - 0 as the quarter expired. In the second, Lions quarterback Craig Wilson split the defense with a forty-six yard pass to Kyle Wilson to level the scores. With William McLoghlin booting the extra two points the quickly improving Glasgow outfit also edged into an 8 - 6 lead, which they held onto as the half time whistle came.
The Rams clawed their way back into the lead in the third, when David Hare blasted in from three yards out, for the North Lanarkshire outfit to move to 12 - 8. In the fourth Blair McTague with a thirty yard run increased the Rams' comfort level to 18 - 8. A Jamie McCoy sixty-five yard touchdown snare, with Paul McGovern grabbing the extra two points finally saw of the resilient Lions 8 - 26.
Moray Firth Dolphins 30 v 54 Clyde Valley Hawks
The Hawks headed to next week's showdown with the Rams still unbeaten in this high scoring game. On their opening drive the Hawks marched downfield behind the strong running of Craig McMillan before Lee Nelson opened their account 6 - 0. The Dolphins stormed back with a blazing Brian Mackain forty five yard run down the right for a score and with David Kerr kicking the extra two points, the Dolphins grabbed a first quarter lead 8 - 6.
Nelson added his second and third touchdowns of the day in the second quarter and converted one of his efforts as the Hawks looked to have built an unassailable 26 - 8 lead. However, a Chris Scrivens dive in from the two for Moray Firth reduced the arrears to 26 - 14, as the Dolphins refused to lie down. Scrivens then hauled in a thirty-five yard pass to bring the Dolphins back into the game and with Kerr again nailing his kick the mighty Hawks closed the half with a slender 26 - 22 lead.
Clyde Valley began to stamp their authority in the third period and their defense added to the tally when Glen Chapman claimed his second interception of the afternoon and scampered to pay dirt to ease the Hawks' advantage. With the extra two being good, last years Scottish champions moved out to 32 - 22. Nelson notched his fourth score of the day with a three-yard dash and Phil Moran ran in the extra two points as the third came to a close with the home side trailing 42 - 22.
Nelson continued his scoring spree in the fourth, before John Devoy rumbled in from close range to push the Hawks beyond the fifty-point barrier. The Dolphins, whose never say die attitude was once again evident, were not to be outdone. Brian Mackain latched onto a wayward pass ane returned the ball fifty-five yards for a score. Kerr completed the afternoons scoring when he again booted the extra two, to leave the score at 54 - 30.
