BYAFA Results Week 7
BAFC Harrogate Hawks 0 v 32 Handforth Hammerheads
Another game conceded by the Hawks due to no fault on their own. The coaching staff arrived at the ground at 9:00am to a newly marked field only to find that the college had sent their entire intake home for the weekend and failed to check that a game was taking place. With organisational and communications skills like this it is a good job we don't have to rely on them to defend the country!
Moray Firth Dolphins 0 v Glasgow Tigers 24
The Tigers gave themselves an outside chance of making the playoffs with this victory. Both teams moved the ball throughout the first quarter but were unable to get the initial breakthrough. With the game well into the second quarter the Tigers finally snatched the lead thanks to an eleven-yard burst into the end zone by William McLauchlan. The same player then kicked his own conversion to push Glasgow into an 8 - 0 lead by halftime.
The third quarter remained scoreless thanks to good defensive work by both sides and as they moved into the final period it was still anyone's game. Tigers' quarterback Craig Wilson hit Derek Russell for a two yard score to pad the Glasgow outfits' lead. With McLaughlan booting the extra two points the Tigers moved out into a 16 - 0 advantage. With time running down Ryan Hunter grabbed an errant Dolphins pass and dashed back the twenty-five yards to score. McLaughlan once again kicked the extra points to seal a hard-earned victory.
Wessex Stallions 6 v 14 Bath Cardinals
Somewhere along the line the Cardinals do not seem to have read the script. New teams are not supposed to keep on winning as they do. They opened their account in the first quarter when quarterback Stuart Miller rolled out right and the Stallions defense failed to contain. He sprinted into the end zone from over forty yards out leaving defenders trailing in his wake. Tom Evans increased the lead to 8 - 0 when he kicked the extra two points.
Wessex clawed their way back into the game in the second when rising start Jamie McIlroy blasted in from two yards out. This time the extra two points was not successful leaving the Stallions trailing 8 - 6. Bath are rapidly gaining the reputation of being able to win games on big plays as they proved last week against the Wolverines. With the second quarter drawing to its close John Granville snared a wayward Stallions pass in his own end zone and galloped the length of the pitch for a 100 yard interception return to the delight of his coaches and team mates. Once again the two points were not completed and the new boys went into the locker room leading 14 - 6 at the half.
Despite valiant efforts in the third and fourth quarters the Stallions could not dent the ever-improving Cardinals defense and so the fairy tale continues.
Inverclyde Sharks 14 v 20 Clyde Valley Hawks
The Sharks came close to the upset of the season in Scotland so far. Taking the lead in the first quarter through a Gary Clark run, Inverclyde increased their lead by a further two when Alan Parker kicked the extra two. This was a lead they held onto until the second quarter.
The Hawks stormed back in the second when Ben Hann linked up with Paul Shanta from twenty-five yards out to get on the board. Hann then found Lee Collins in the end zone for the extra two and to tie the scores at 8 - 8. Lee Nelson put the Hawks into the lead on their following drive when he jinxed his way in from over forty yards out, giving Clyde Valley a 14 - 8 advantage at the end of half time.
The Sharks kept themselves in the game with a Darren Banks run midway through the third quarter to level up the scores once more. With the extra points attempt being blocked it all depended on the fourth quarter.
The honours finally went to the Hawks when Ben Hann took a quarterback sneak in for the final score of the day and leave Clyde Valley with their 100% record in tact.
