BYAFA Results Week 6
Clyde Valley Hawks 32 v 0 Moray Firth Dolphins
The Hawks kept up their unbeaten record and look to be set to repeat their showdown with North Lanarkshire Rams for the Scottish Championship if these early results are anything to go by.
Lee Collins got the home side onto the scoreboard in the first quarter when he pulled in an eight yard pass and promptly added the extra two points by latching onto the conversion attempt to spring an early 8 - 0 lead. Lee Nelson who racked up well over 100 yards for the day increased the lead to 14 - 0 when he scampered into the end zone from some fully forty-nine yards out as the quarter drew to an end.
The Dolphins resistance stiffened in the second but it was left to Nelson to break their hearts with a great individual run from forty yards out. With the conversion once again failing the Hawks went into the break with a comfortable 20 - 0 advantage.
Collins again grabbed a score in the third, this time from thirteen yards with Tom Chapman holding onto the two-point pass to extend the lead. Gary Orr then recovered a fumble in the Dolphins end zone to inflict further misery upon the Dolphins.
Andy Reynolds with a fourteen yard interception return put the icing on the cake for Clyde Valley who now sit as joint leaders of the Scottish Division.
Lancashire Wolverines 6 v 8 Bath Cardinals
Seasoned observers have the Wolverines as potential English Champions for this year. The problem is that no one told Bath Cardinals. The new boys are rapidly proving that they are a competitive outfit with this narrow victory of last year's finalists.
From the start the Cardinals defense tackled like demons, stifling the normally effective Wolverine ground game and when John Gibbon burst through the Lancashire line to record a safety, the Cardinals edged themselves into a narrow lead. Throughout the first period both sides managed to move the ball but were met by some superb defensive plays and the quarter came to a close with Bath clinging to their 2 - 0 advantage.
The second saw the Wolverines begin to establish more momentum and look more of an offensive threat. With Bath holding firm they were suddenly caught unawares as Quarterback David Mead hit Sam Fogg totally unmarked over the middle to put the Lancashire side into the lead. The extra two pointer was stopped at the line of scrimmage.
Both sides fought tooth and claw for the remainder of the half, with defenses managing to come up with big plays at vital times to keep the large Festival of Football crowd on the edge of their seats. With the score 6 - 2 in favour of the Wolverines the second half promised to be a real treat.
It looked as if the next team to score would probably take the game, and the Cardinals suddenly grabbed the match by the scruff of the neck. Matt Jenkins took the kick off on his own twenty yard line and outpaced the Wolverines defense to take it back for a score and push Bath into an 8 - 6 lead.
Still the Wolverines fought to regain their earlier lead and still the Cardinals continued to defy them as the game wore on. Then with 50 seconds to go Mead, beginning to emerge as a quarterback of the future, hit Fogg once again in the end zone. The Wolverines were jubilant while the Cardinals slumped. Five seconds later the roles were reversed as the score was ruled out for an illegible lineman down field and Bath hung on to their hundred percent record.
Handforth Hammerheads 28 v 6 Wessex Stallions
Ric Hennessy provided a cameo performance as to why he has been the best Quarterback in youth football for the last three years as Handforth improved their record to 2-1 with a convincing victory over Wessex Stallions.
Neither team were able to score in the first quarter as the Stallions ball control offense found the going tough and the Hammerheads passing attack failed to get on track. Handforth scored first, Ford Wilding taking a short pass from QB Hennessy and racing 70 yards for the score. Hennessy tacked on the extra points to make the score 8-0. The Hammerheads extended their lead later in the quarter when Hennessy on a quarterback draw sped 39 yards to the endzone and fullback James Lynch barrelled in for the conversion.
Wessex fought their way back into the game in the third quarter, Jamie McIlroy scoring from 1 yard out but the conversion failed leaving the score at 16-6. Handforth’s Tom Bale took the ensuing kick off down to the Stallions 12 before Aleck Aspinall scored on a 12-yard sweep to reaffirm the Hammerheads superiority. The conversion failed closing out the scoring for the third quarter at 22-6.
Aspinall scored his second TD of the day in the fourth quarter, reeling in a 30-yard bomb from QB Hennessy, to give the Hammerheads a hard-fought victory.
London Blitz 32 v 0 BAFC Harrogate Hawks
The Lennox Johnson road show turned up at the Festival of Football to help down the Hawks.
A punt return for an 80 yard score by Johnson put the Blitz ahead early. This was followed up when the Hawks thought they had sacked the Quarterback, the ball bobbling backwards for about fifteen yards where Johnson grabbed it, dropped his hips sending two defenders in opposite directions and then sprinting sixty yards, virtually untouched. Tim Tang found Gary Newcome for the extra two.
Abdul Jallar burst into the endzone in the second quarter to put the Blitz twenty points clear and Johnson increased his personal tally by another six before the end of the half.
The second half saw Johnson stroll in once again and then add the extra two before the game had to be halted because the ambulance was called away.
