Youth Kitted International
Team England 29 v 3 Team Scotland
The youth season finally came to an end at a sunny but blustery Ram Stadium Dewsbury, in front of the largest crowd yet for this fixture.
Both sides struggled to move the ball in the initial stages of the game as a combination of nerves and the windy conditions got the better of them, forcing them to exchange punts. Scotland's Gary Clark seemed to be at the centre of everything defensively early on recording the first four tackles for his side on his way to a personal tally of eleven for the game. Scotland commenced their next drive on their own twenty-five, when Alex Dunn dropped onto a fumble to give Team England excellent field position. Quarterback Ric Hennessy rolled right and kept the ball for a three-yard gain and then hit wideout Grahame Warby at the back of the end zone from twenty yards away to open the scoring. The extra point kick was blocked leaving the home nation 6 - 0 ahead.
Scotland came back behind the running of Mark Larnach and short passes to Martin Wallace until Dunn stepped in front of his receiver to pick the ball off. Two drives later Sean Carney snared a wayward pass to give the ball back to Scotland only for Adam Biggs to do likewise for England as both sides continued to miscue.
As the game wound down to half time Alisdair Longford held onto another stray pass to give Scotland a chance to set up a field goal attempt from 37 yards which Craig Wilson duly nailed and leave the score at 6 - 3 as the period expired.
Johnathan Kohler stripped the ball for Steve Garwood to recover as England continued to record takeaways but the Scottish defense once again held firm. There was still nothing between the two sides until Hennessy rolled out right, crashed into his own offensive line, spun round and promptly scampered down an empty left hand side of the field to pay dirt from thirty yards away. With the kick once more being unsuccessful, Team England extended their lead to 12 - 3.
A thundering sack by Gareth Barratt jarred the ball loose for Dunn to recover once more on the Scotland four-yard line, but some resolute Scottish defense and a series of penalties forced England back to the thirty as the third period closed.
Successive David Mead passes to Warby and Jacquet kept the next England drive alive and set up a Ford Wilding field goal from thirty-three yards to edge England to an unconvincing 15 - 3 lead.
Scotland took to the air with catches by Ben Hann, Derek Russell and Martin Wallace as they moved the ball more freely and threatened to break the game wide open only for Kohler to finally halt the drive with yet another pick off.
As the game moved into its final stages Ian Jacquet hauled in a twelve-yard Cottrell touchdown strike to virtually seal the game at 21 - 3 with the extra point kick sailing wide left. Alex Dunn then recorded his second interception of the day to stifle Scotland's next drive and two plays later Lennox Johnson swept right and darted into the end zone virtually untouched from twenty yards out. A poor snap left Hennessy groping for the ball but he recovered, got up and scampered down the left to pad the lead to 29 - 3.
With Scotland once again driving well Kyle Walker snared England's fourth interception and seventh forced turnover of the afternoon to complete a thoroughly entertaining and well-spirited game.
