The Blitz resumed their BYAFA youth program after several years in the wilderness but were unfortunate
enough to run into neighbours the Warriors, who have not been defeated in over two years. While the
Warriors fielded a side that had lost a huge chunk of their back to back Championship winning team,
their program is further advanced and it showed.
Last week the Warriors used their ground game to see off the Spartans. This week they took to the air,
an ironic move given the name of their opposition. The first quarter was relatively quiet with a Jerome
Allen hitting Emmanuel Mukoro for a fifty yard score and a two-point conversion separating the sides.
By the end of the half the home side were home and dry. Allen linked up with rookie Mike Green from
twenty-five yards to increase the lead and then found Mukoro once again from forty-four. With both
conversions being good they stretched their lead to 24 – 0. The Warriors had another scoring rush,
downing the kick off returner in the end zone for a safety and then Calvin Bryan added insult to injury
by promptly running back the kick off from fully sixty yards for another score. An Oliver Springett
six yard burst added a further six, and with the conversion again being good the visitors found
themselves 40 – 0 adrift at the half.
Allen connected with Mike Green from fourteen yards for the youngster to snare his second touchdown of
the day early in the third. With Allen giving way to Greenfield the Warriors hardly missed a beat. Matt
Russell latched onto a Greenfield fourteen-yard pass for another six and then Jermaine Ford pulled in a
punt and sped forty yards for yet another score. With the third period over the Warriors were in a
commanding 58 – 0 lead.
Jason Allen clawed in a Greenfield pass and jinked into the end zone leaving two defenders flat footed
while rookie Daniel Menshi opened his own account speeding in to score from twenty-five yards and
complete the afternoons scoring. With both conversions being good the Warriors walked away with a
stunning 74 – 0 victory.
The Blitz showed tremendous heart and never gave up. The rookie side will improve and if they are
typical of the previous Blitz sides that have graced youth football will rapidly improve and be
challenging for honours in a day or two. They are littered with raw talent and once they gain the
experience and improve their technique they will even cause some sides problems this year. As for the
Warriors, despite losing a number of stars from the previous two years, seem to just keep getting
better and better, driving the quality of youth football to another level.
