London Warriors 49 v 9 Norwich Devils

This fixture was the third meeting of the year between these divisional rivals with the results tied at one game apiece. The Devils had inflicted the only defeat on the National Champions in three years in their home fixture while the Warriors had their revenge in their home time, so this decider was going to be all that both sides had hoped it would be.

This time the Warriors left nothing to chance. Jerome Allen, who will bury anyone if given the time to throw, found Mukoro from twenty-five yards out to open the scoring early in the opening quarter and with the extra two points added to the tally the favourites were soon 8 – 0 ahead. Calvin Bryant then split the much vaunted Devils defense, scampering in for a score from the half way line leaving a wake a trailing would be tacklers behind him to edge the home side out to 14 – 0. The Devils however remained resilient, mounting a drive of their own, leaving James Tovell notching a field goal as the visitors drive stalled to leave the score at 14 – 3 by the end of the first.

The second quarter remained tight with the Norwich defense adding to their reputation by refusing to give ground to their far more fancies opponents. It was left to Mike Green to claw in an Allen thirty-nine yard scoring strike to finally breach the Devils. With the additional of the two converted points the Warriors stretched out to a 22 – 3 reasonably comfortable half time lead.

The London side used their passing game to good effect in the third with Allen once more hooking up with Mukoro from fifteen yards for another six points. With the conversion again adding the extra two the defending Champions were well on their way at 30 – 3. A Tovell three yard blast bought a smile to the Norwich sidelines as they reduced the arrears to 30 – 9 by the end of the third.

The final quarter belonged entirely to the Warriors as they over ran an wilting Devil defense. Bryant added another thirty yards dash to the end zone to his earlier effort and with the extra points collected they swept out to a 38 – 9 lead. Dayle Greenfield, replacing Allen at the quarterback spot, showed his ability taking the ball in from twenty yards to add another six points and with another successful conversion the Warriors had blasted their way to a 46 – 9 lead. A Dooner thirty-two yard field goal completed the rout at 49 – 9 with the Warriors booking their third consecutive spot in the championship game.

In their first year back in youth football for some time the Devils proved themselves beyond the expectations of most. They have a fine defense but need to generate more on the other side of the ball to progress. This is an area their coaching staff will work on over the winter break and no one will be surprised next year if they go one step further as they are quite capable of doing.

The Warriors will now concentrate on their ultimate goal, to achieve their third consecutive championship crown. They will prove difficult to overcome but of course the Devils have already proved once this season that it is not impossible.
