London Blitz 12 v 0 Essex Spartans

The Blitz proved that their rapid improvement over the previous weeks was no fluke as they avenged their earlier defeat by the Spartans, a side going into the game with only five fit linemen and the bare minimum number of players.

The game started well for the visitors when Ashley Faiers intercepted the first play on the Blitz's opening drive. Spartans' quarterback Josh Pool took full advantage when he connected with wide receiver Stuart Mount who was finally hauled down inside the one-yard line. With a great opportunity to record the go ahead score the Spartans resorted to their undisciplined selves of recent weeks. They were penalized for a false start and two plays later fumbled on a bad toss to Spartan captain Dave "Doc" Martin handing the ball back to the Blitz.

The London side responded quickly moving the ball downfield and inside the visitors' ten yard line when disaster overtook their opponents. Spartans' inspirational leader, Doc Martin, was put out of the game when a blow to a knee he had hurt two weeks before meant he could not continue. The hastily reshuffled defence put up a valiant effort but a two-yard run from Yusaf Topol took the ball over the line for the opening six points. The attempted kick was blocked leaving the home side narrowly ahead.

On the resulting kick off the ball was caught inside the ten yard line but a stumble resulted in the play being called dead. The Essex side could not move the ball and a good punt from Ashley Faiers, out of his own end zone forced the Blitz back into their own half. The visitors? defense continued to fight for every inch getting the ball back when they forced the Blitz to surrender possession on a turnover on downs.

However the problems continued to mount for the injury ravaged Spartans. Going into a game with only five linemen is hardly ideal, forcing many to play both sides of the ball. The continual attrition gradually wore them down and failed to give quarterback Josh Pool any time to move or protect the ball. Under extreme pressure from a strengthening home side defense he fumbled the ball away. The Blitz needed no second invitation and moved the ball down to the visitors' goal line. As they strove for their second score they somehow fumbled the ball away and into the end zone, only for Michael Sinyangne to scoop the ball up for the score and a 12 - 0 lead. Ben Locker batted away the attempted two-point pass to keep his side still in with an outside chance.

Forced to punt on the next drive, further disaster overtook the game Spartans when Nick Cresswell took a hit to the head and was knocked out. With no adequate replacement on the sideline, although many volunteered, the coaches were left in a dilemma and with no alternative but to call the game in the third.

The Blitz now find themselves in an interesting position. With two fixtures still to come against the Kent Exiles, they could just scrape into the playoffs if other results went their way. In the likes of Yusaf Topol, who gained sixty yards on eight carries they certainly have the potential. The Spartans need to regroup and prepare for next season. They are a dedicated and close knit group and should take so much from this season, making them all the stronger for 2008
