This game was important to both sides. The Wolverines were looking to kick-start their season while the
Tigers looked to cement another appearance in the post season. The Tigers moved a step closer to the
play offs with this victory, putting pressure on both the Gateshead Senators and Clyde Valley Hawks for
first place and an automatic home first round tie. For the Colts, they continue to learn and improve,
but their day was marred by yet another unfortunate injury, something that has blighted their season so
far.
A superb return of the kick off put the Glasgow side in good field position which they took advantage
of immediately. A short drive ensued before Kieran Phillips went in from just two yards out to give
them an early lead. Lancashire’s linebacker, Craig Davidson got a hand on Andrew Burn’s attempted two
point conversion attempted to keep the score at 6 – 0.
The visitors continued to struggle offensively, a problem that has dogged them all season, being forced
to punt on their next possession and giving the Tigers the chance to mount a long drive. The home side
duly obliged with full back Scott Watson blasting over from the two to cap the march down field. Burns
booted the extra two to give the Tigers a 14 – 0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Lancashire defense came out with renewed heart in the second period, forcing an interception and
limiting matching the Tigers efforts bow for blow. A solitary Kieran Phillips repeat of his opening
score was the only the addition to the scores. Andrew Burns notched the two points to leave the home
side comfortably up at 22 – 0 at the half.
The third quarter mirrored the second, with the Wolverine defense only succumbing to a twenty-five run
by quarterback Andrew Burns who had his resulting two point attempt kick blocked. However,
Martin McNair along with a swarming Tiger defense forced a safety to leave the score at 30 – 0 in
favour of the Glasgow outfit.
The Wolverines are nothing if not spirited, and ended the third period parked on the Tiger one yard line
but could no find a way through.
The fourth quarter remained scoreless, the Tigers using the time to expand their offense, met with
stout resistant from the less experienced Lancashire side who forced turnovers, including free safety,
Greg Freeman, hauling in his second pick of the afternoon.
The Tigers are back in contention for the Northern Conference title with this victory. The Wolverines
continue to learn and grow. No Wolverine side is ever bad, their history and tradition proves that.
They will mature over the next couple of years into being one of the top ranked sides, a position the
Tigers have been in for maybe four years now.
