Gateshead Senators 14 v 16 Glasgow Tigers

This weekend both Scottish sides saw off English competition in the Northern Conference, with the Tigers repeating their victory over the Senators from a couple of weeks earlier. The first game between these two had been close and this proved to be another tight encounter with the Tigers just edging out their less experienced opponents.

A Kieran Phillips eight yard run put the visitors in front in the first quarter, and with Andrew Burns adapting himself to the kicking duties well this year, booting the extra two point conversion the Tigers looked well on their way.

The Senators replied in the second quarter with Gavin Barr scampering in to bring the Senators to within two points but with the extra points going begging it was to prove once again to be their Achilles’ heel. The home side’s celebrations however turned out to be a little premature, when Nick Halfpenny collected the kick off some sixty or so yards out and outpaced the Senators special teams to restore the eight point advantage. Burns once again nailed the extra two points on the conversion and the Tigers had eased their lead to 14 – 6.

The game proved tight throughout the third period, with defenses in the supremacy and while both offenses had some success in moving the ball neither could find that extra punch to trouble the scoreboard.

In the fourth the Senators responded with a two yard Quarterback keeper from Ben Thomas and with Barr barrelling in for the conversion the lead was down to two points in favour of the Glasgow outfit. From there on in the Senators tried to keep up the momentum swing, but the Tigers drew on their years of experience to see off a very competitive Senator side and still leave the Northern Conference wide open.
