The leaders of the South West Conference went head to head in this fixture, with the Aztecs determined to
gain revenge for their season opening defeat against the upstart Knights and set themselves up for another
tilt at the National Championship crown.
On a wet, rain soaked pitched the Bristol ground game proved effective early on, with the Knights defense
proving a superb match for it. The first quarter was a game for lovers of high quality defensive football
until Nick Olive found Daniel Appleyard who sprinted clear of the Bristol defense to open the scoring with
a forty-five yard touchdown grab for the Knights. Sebastian Phillips split the uprights with the conversion
to add the extra two and ease the home side out to 8 – 0 at the end of the first quarter.
The second period belonged to the Aztecs. Their pounding ground game frequently drove them downfield even
going for it twice on fourth down as they powered their way into good field position. Eventually such
pressure was bound to tell. With the ball on their own one yard line the Farnham side fumbled the ball away.
Stef Williams needed no second invitation and plunged in from two yards out. Fianzo Smith barrelled his
way in for the two extra points to tie the scores. The visitors recovered their own onside kick but with
two back to back offensive penalties any advantage they might have had soon evaporated and the sides
headed to the locker room tied at 8 – 8 at the half.
Defenses still held the upper hand in the third. The Bristol outfit mounting a mammoth goal line stand to
deny the home side from the one yard line. The Farnham defense proved they were no slouches either, with
Mitch Crossland-Scott forcing a safety to edge the home side into an 10 – 8 by the end of the third quarter.
The fourth followed the pattern of the third, with defenses getting better and better. It was only fitting
that the last score of the afternoon went to the defense with Crossland-Scott collecting a forced Bristol
blunder and notching the game winning score when he scooped the ball up and stepped into the end zone.
This was a game of the highest quality from two well disciplined and well prepared sides. Both are destined
for post season activity. The Knights look as if they are now in a position to break the three year Aztec
stranglehold on the South East but the Bristol outfit are a formidable outfit and only a fool would rule
them out at this stage. These two are certainly in the top echelon of Youth Football and will prove equal
to any side that has pretentions for the title of 2007 Youth Tackle Champions.
