Essex Spartans 16 v 14 London Blitz

This proved to be a fascinating and hard fought game. The opening quarter was an error and penalty strewn affair as both sides let nerves and their enthusiasm get the better of them. It was hardly a surprise that it was tie at 0 – 0 as the sides exchanged ends for the second quarter.

In the second quarter the Spartans settled down first. Dave (Doc) Martin setting the example a team captain should, stripped the ball from the Blitz running back and returned the ball from around the half way line into the end zone to open the home side’s account. Kanerowz Chaviers-Lowe sped into claim the extra two points to extend the Spartan lead to 8-0.

The Blitz responded straight away helped by indiscipline from the Spartan defence. On a fourth down play in the red zone the visitors gained an intentional face mask penalty allowing them to keep the drive alive, and allowing them to step into the end zone on the next play. With the extra points attempt being a success the scores at the end of an evenly matched half stood tied at 8 - 8.

The second half opened with the visitors constructing a long methodical drive that lasted over nine minutes. Finally punching the ball in from seven yards out the Blitz had their noses in front. With them failing to make the most of the conversion they left the Spartans in with a fighting chance with an 8 - 14 deficit.

Taking the ball on their next drive the Spartans went to a punishing ground game and ran the ball in when Ross Watson got over the goal line from about the twelve yards to bring the scores level at 14 – 14.Chaviers-Lowe again used his pace well to notch the two points and give his side a narrow 16 – 14 advantage. With time running out both sides had a chance to add to their scores but at long last the Spartans managed to hold out for their first and thoroughly deserved, BYAFA conference victory.

Both sides can take much from this clash. The Blitz were short of a few of their regular players but made a great contest of the game. If they continue to play with the same heart and effort it will not be long before they taste success. As for the Spartans, who have showed improvement over a number of games proved they are on course and that their previous tie was no fluke. Now they have the confidence the flood gates of victories may well open.
