The Exiles got their season back on track and took a gigantic step towards a playoff berth with this
victory over the Spartans, who need to eradicate the errors and indiscipline within their ranks to be able
to push on themselves.
After a tight defensive and error strewn first quarter the home side finally settled their nerves when a
Grundy twenty-eight yard pass found Gould in the end zone for the opening score. An O’Neil safety
compensated for the missed conversion and edged the Kent side out to 8 – 0, with Shillabeer then scooting
into to score a further six points from seven yards out to leave the Exiles in a comfortable 14 – 0 half
time lead.
The Spartans moved the ball well in the third period but continued to shoot themselves in the foot. Two
drives were halted by fumbles, while numerous penalties did little to improve their chances of reducing the
score. As the third period expired the Exiles were still in control of the game without either side
managing to trouble the scoreboard.
Kent finally sealed in their victory in the fourth. A fourteen yard reverse led to Mann out speeding an
over pursuing Spartan defense for the next score. Grundy then hooked up with Gould once more to repeat
their opening score to swell the lead to 26 – 0. The two point conversion kick added the final icing to
the cake and moved the Exiles up to third spot in the South Eastern Conference table.
The Spartans are so close to being a good side but do need to learn from their mistakes. If they can only
get rid of the needless penalties and hold onto the ball they could be a match for anyone. A little
confidence in their case could still take them into the play offs once these issues have been addressed.
The Exiles on the other hand should now be able to settle down and consolidate. They look almost certain to
feature in the post season providing they have no silly slip-ups from here on in.
