The Knights made a welcome return to youth football by hosting the Southern Conference's opening 2006 fixture. This turned out to be a close and intensely fought defensive battle played in tremendous spirit as both sides slugged out a scoreless first quarter.
The Knights broke the deadlock in the second following a determined drive, with Daniel Appleyard scampering in from two yards out to give his side a 6 - 0 lead. Kent's reply was immediate with Luke Aylward darting his way to the end zone from thirteen yards out to tie the game at 6 - 6 at the half.
The third period looked to be heading for a scoreless stalemate, but with the Knights backed up on their own one yard line, running John Hatcher was downed in his own end zone by a posse of the Exiles defense. For the first time in the afternoon the visitors nudged themselves into a narrow 6 - 8 advantage thanks to the safety.
With the Exiles beginning to live up to the potential they have shown over the last two years they finally eased themselves into a more comfortable position. Following a solid drive based on their ground game Aylward repeated his heroics of the second quarter to give the Kent outfit their first win of the season. The Knights can take a great deal from this game. They proved to have a stubborn defense and managed to sustain some offense. Once they get more familiar with the rigours of BYAFA youth football they will be a match for anyone.
