PA Knights 14 v 12 Tamworth Trojans.

Earlier in the season these two sides had served up an excellent game in a virtual quagmire at Tamworth. The weather was kinder this time around, the football even better and the entertainment value of an even higher quality.

The Knights opened the scoring in the first quarter, building a solid drive before Daniel Appleyard stepped into the end zone to notch the opening six points. Both sides traded possessions throughout the remainder of the quarter and all of the second until with the half drawing to a close when Ian Dennent scampered in from five yards out to tie the score for the visitors at 6 – 6.

A dramatic Appleyard run of fully fifty yards put the home side back into the lead and the extra two point conversion eased them out to a 14 – 6 advantage as the third quarter ended.

Forcing the home side back to close to their own goal line and making them punt, the Trojans’ Shirajul Hoque scrambled up the ball as the kick was blocked and strode into the end zone to reduce the arrears to 14 – 12. With the conversion failing the home side held on to take the victory.

Make no mistake about it, both sides are well coached and have some talented athletes. Both will be better and more experienced next year and will challenge for honours. Both organizations are growing, the playing strength increasing and have already proved to be valuable assets to Youth Football.
