Essex Spartans 6 v 18 Tamworth Trojans.

The Tamworth Trojans, lumbered with three away games on the trot, came back with the bragging rights as the two teams still seeking their first win of the season went head to head. Both sides have been gaining experience this year and showing signs of improvement as the season has progressed.

The game started well for the hosts, when they took the opening drive downfield and found the endzone for an early lead with a dive by Ike Okunkwo from two yards out to record their first points and lead of this campaign. With the extra points attempt being unsuccessful the Essex side held a 6 – 0 lead.

However the Trojans were not swayed from their purpose and responded with some good drives of their own, before finally putting together their first score of the day in the second period. Ian Dennant barrelled in from one yard out behind their strong offensive line to tie the game up at the half at 6 – 6 and leave the contest still wide open.

The Tamworth side gained confidence and belief from their efforts and it was no surprise when quarterback Aaron Rowe found tight end Tom Bishop in the end zone on a play action pass to give the Trojans a 12 – 6 advantage, their first lead of the game and of their short history.

Later in the third, Rowe again linked up with Bishop in the endzone for what looked like a further score, only to find a holding call to bring it back. The respite for the Spartans was short lived for Dennant added to his tally by blasting his way from ten yards out for a score following excellent blocks from both Nathan Ryan and Steve Gregory. With the visitors once again failing to convert the extra points they held a healthy 18 – 6 as the third quarter concluded.

The Staffordshire outfit thought their victory was certain when both Shirajul Hoque and then Bishop once more had what looked like game breaking scores called back for infringements. However the game Spartans, reduced in numbers could not find a way back and the game tailed away with the visitors claiming their first ever victory.
