A solid start from Bristol proved enough to see off the visitors from Kent in the stifling heat in this
top of the table clash in the English Conference. Both sides entered the contest undefeated and with
eyes on the conference title.
In the first quarter an interception from corner back Tom Wallis, which he returned thirty-nine yards,
set up a twenty-eight yard field goal for Owain Chambers as the home side opted to put points on the
board on fourth and short.
A Will Wagstaff punt pinned the visitors on their two-yard line and a fierce rush upfront from the
Aztec defensive line saw Olly Skuse, Eric Bruce and Charles Baker swarm all over the Kent back in the
end zone forcing a safety and pushing their lead out to 5 - 0.
Liam Miller turned a busted play into a twenty-eight yard dart up the middle for a score and with
Owain Chambers slotting home the conversion, the Exiles found themselves 13 –0 adrift at the end of the
first period.
The second quarter saw the Aztec defense continuing its fine start. Mike Brookes snared a wayward pass
to set up the second score. Some solid running and a nice reception from Dave Titheridge for thirty-yards
allowed Stef Williams to finally scamper in untouched from three yards for the score. Owain Chambers
duly obliged with the conversion as the Aztecs moved to a convincing 21 – 0 lead at the half.
That was it for the scoring on the day but the second half was still an entertaining battle although
the mid-day heat got the better of both teams and slowed the pace a little. The result moves the Aztecs
out to 4 – 0 and the chance to claim the conference. The Exiles have arrived as a force in their
division, and providing they can eliminate their mistakes are sure to be in the mix come the end of the
season
