Bristol Aztecs 36 v 8 Glasgow Tigers

Bristol emphasised their second place ranking this year in the clash of the two BYAFA Conference Champions at a specially arranged exhibition game at Britbowl XX. Taking up the offer BAFL to stage this game, BYAFA invested heavily in it in the hope of bringing the Youth game to a wider audience and attempt to influence the senior clubs to develop their own future. A quick scan of the rosters for the senior teams this weekend reveals over fifty former youth players made it to the finals, an encouraging example for their counterparts to follow. However, back to matters on the field.

The Aztecs looked to be in good position to open the scoring in the first period, marching down field before being forced to punt and downing it on the Tigers two yard line. The Scottish champions set off on a long drive as the game moved into second quarter. A superb piece of misdirection by Kris Kennedy allowed the quarterback to roll out left and find Kyle Wilson unattended in the end zone from twenty yards out. Derek Russell, always reliable with his boot, notched the extra two points to give the Tigers an 0 - 8 lead but at no point did the Aztecs look ruffled. They were quick to reply with their well-executed ground game. Eric Bruce for twenty yards, Steff Williams for twelve moved the ball to the Tigers thirty-yard line where Bruce on an end around scampered in for the score. The bulky frame of John Ngwenya bulldozed up the middle taking his own blockers with him to tie the scores at 8 - 8.

On the Tigers next drive Kennedy was picked off on the Bristol thirty-eight and although it looked as if the drive was going to be stopped in its tracks a holding call kept it alive. The Aztecs needed no second invitation. Bruce with a twelve-yard burst up the middle, followed by a Williams dart of thirteen off left tackle moved the Aztecs down field. A further two Williams runs set the ball up on the Tigers eight where he strolled in virtually unopposed to move the West Country outfit out into a 14 - 6 lead.Bruce was stopped by a posse of Tigers defenders to deny the extra two points and leave the game nicely poised at the half.

A Daniel Baker blast from thirty-three yards out, breaking a series of desperate Tigers tackles, edged the Aztecs further ahead. With the attempted two point pass being overthrown Bristol had to settle for a 20 - 8 lead. With Glasgow forced to punt on their next drive, Bristol's Liam Miller gathered in the fumbled snap to give his side excellent field possession and the Aztecs did not need a second invitation. Wagstaffe found Owen Chambers from twenty-two yards out, the ball initially bouncing out of the hands of the defensive back, but thanks to some superb concentration Chambers eventually came down with the ball. Wagstaffe added the two extra points himself when he rolled out right and nipped in unopposed to stretch the lead out to 28 - 8.

Forced to take to the air the Tigers had some relative success in rolling Kennedy out to find Wilson in particular. However, going for it on fourth and eight, the ever-watchful Aaron Coffer came up with his second interception of the day earning himself MVP honours and returned it to mid field.

The teams traded possessions as the game moved into the fourth, with the Tigers managing to recover possession from their own punt. However their success was short lived as Anthony Scott honed in on the ball for another pick

Bristol went back to what they do best, reeling off run after run before Miller scooted free up the middle from thirty-four yards out to claim the final score of the day. Steff Williams, following a five yard penalty ran in the extra two form the seven and give the Aztecs a comfortable 36 - 8 victory.

So the BYAFA season draws to a close at least on the playing side. Thanks must go to the Tigers and Aztecs for putting on a game of relatively high quality, entertaining the crowd and conducting themselves in the main in the manner that is expected of Youth Football. They have done a lot to sell it to others.
