London Olympians 36 v 3 Bristol Aztecs

The Aztecs travelled to London knowing that a win and avoiding a defeat of more than thirty-two points would give them the Southern Conference crown. For the Olympians it was a little simpler, win by more than thirty-two and they were Conference champs.

Bristol got off to the best possible start taking a 3 – 0 lead early in the game through a Will Parkhouse thirty-one yard field goal. They moved the ball into London territory once more only to fumble the it away, and speedster Devar Gayle added another to his tally of long distance scores sweeping left, breaking two tackles and outpacing the Aztec defense from over fifty yards out to score. A run up the middle gave the Olympians the extra two points to move them ahead 8 – 3 but still a long way from their target.

The Olympians increased their advantage in the second quarter when Will Bryce pulled in a fourteen yard pass to end the half at 14 – 3 in favour of the home side.

In the third the Olympians began to pull away and edge nearer to the thirty-six points they would need to claim the title. Jumar Woodhouse snared a thirty-eight yard bomb down the left sideline and Dominic McPherson held onto the extra two-point pass. Gayle took a handoff from around sixteen yards out, bounced outside, shrugged off a pair of tackles and went in. A fullback blast up the middle moved the London outfit to 30 – 3 and just six points away from the conference title.

The inevitable happened in the fourth quarter when Bryce latched onto a sixteen-yard pass in the corner of the end zone to bring the title home for the Olympians.

The Aztecs face Kent Exiles next week before hosting the Olympians in the playoffs later in the month. The winners of that clash will go forward to meet the playoff winners of the Northern Conference in the BYAFA Bowl on 11th September at the Ram Stadium Dewsbury. The Aztecs will hope that history repeats itself when last season they won the conference title and then lost in the playoffs to Bath Cardinals. This time they have finished runners up and hope to emulate their near neighbours by clinching the final spot.
