London Olympians 30 v 16 Bath Cardinals

The Cardinals injury plagued season goes from bad to worse with the loss of several more key players in this game of the highest quality. The visitors lost GB and starting Quarterback Henry Allen on the opening play of the game with a knee injury to add to their woes. Devar Gayle opened the home side's account with a typical long distance burst, sprinting in from sixty yards out. With the two point conversion being good the London outfit looked to be in the driving seat at 8 - 0.

The quality of the Bath side showed when Alex Barton stripped the ball on the next Olympians drive, grabbed it from the ground and took it back thirty-five yards for the score. The reliable boot of Chris Hunt tied the scores, but Barton had to leave the field due to injury after his heroics.

As the game moved into the second quarter the depleted Cardinal squad continued to match the home side, with only an Ariel Mofondo seventeen yard blast and a successful two point conversion separating the teams. As the half closed and the score 16 - 8 the game was still too close to call.

The third quarter remained a stalemate as the Cardinals clung on and the Olympians took their one score advantage into the fourth. When Gayle scampered in from thirty-six yards out it looked as if the London outfit might run away with the game as they eased into a 22 - 8 advantage. Will Wagstaffe who has been pushing for the Bath starting QB role all season hit Kyle Latore for a fifty-yard touchdown strike and with hunt nailing the extra two point kick the Cardinals were back in the game at 22 - 16. Mofondo eased the Olympians to victory late on with an eleven yard dart with the conversion again being good.

The win leaves the Olympians in with an excellent chance of the play offs, but Bath should still not be discounted. The Cardinals can still upset the fancied Bristol Aztecs and Olympians and will not relinquish the British Champions crown without a fight.
