Bath Cardinals 5 v 19 Bristol Aztecs
The Cardinals suffered their first ever conference defeat in the two years of their existence in this defensive battle. The game started well for Bath when Jordan Allsup recorded a safety and then Chris Hunt booted a field goal from fully fifty-three yards to add to their lead. The home side hit back on the ensuing kick off when Anthony "Bobby" Ammisah collected the ball on his own ten and scampered the length of the pitch to score. The attempted extra two-point kick was blocked to leave the home side with the slenderest 6 - 5 lead at the end of the first.
An Ammisah twenty-yard blast for a score ended an Aztec seventeen-play drive and with Lewis Nixon notching the extra two points the visitors put a little daylight between the teams at 14 - 5. With the half almost up Nixon took advantage of a punt that sailed over the punters' head. He had the presence of mind to chase the punter and the ball down in the end zone to gain another two points on the safety and leave a very tight game at 16 - 5 at the half.
The Cardinal offense spluttered in the third period and a golden opportunity was lost when a certain touchdown was dropped with in the end zone.
A Lewis Nixon thirty-three yard field goal was the only score to separate the teams in the fourth as the Aztecs battled to hold onto their lead and finally down the high flying Cardinals. In a game that only gave up one offensive touchdown, it showed how close these sides are and was a superb example of what can be achieved in the youth game. Both sides go on to face their return fixtures with the London Blitz over the next few weeks and as yet, depending on how results go, neither side can guarantee a play off spot although the Bath side still appear to be favourites.
