The Cardinals brushed away a game challenge by the depleted Brewers to maintain their attempt to hold onto their Southern Conference crown.
The sides exchanged early possessions with the Cardinals unfortunate not to score when Cottrell scampered almost in from eighteen yards out only to fumble the ball away on the three. The Kent side were still unable to move the ball, and on the ensuing punt Tom Evans sped his way into the end zone to open the visitors account. Chris Hunt nailed the extra points kick to pad the lead. With the Brewers’ ground game stuttering they were forced to go to the air, only for them to see Ryan Surry hauls in a wayward pass return it twenty-four yards for a score. Hunt once more booted the extra points as the Cardinals eased their way to 16 – 0. Still trying to go to the air, Kent were once again victims over their over enthusiasm, and Kris Beacham made them pay when he gathered in a loose pass and sprinted back thirty-six yards for the score. Hunt notched his third kick of the day as Bath moved into a comfortable 24 – 0 first quarter lead and the Brewers lost more players to injury.
Once again Kent were forced to punt early in the second quarter and the Cardinal offense went to work, ending with a Mike Cottrell scramble on a twenty two yard score. This time Kent’s never say die attitude saw them block the two points. With the injury toll mounting and the game as good as over as a contest the Brewers took the sensible of option of conceding the game, in the hope that they can get enough players fit and available to complete their inaugural season. While Bath now go on to challenge the Wolverines at next weeks Festival of Football, the Brewers have had to withdraw from their match up with fellow new boys MK Pathfinders.
