London Blitz 14 v 22 Bath Cardinals
Southern Conference Champions Bath Cardinals opened their season against a very competitive Blitz side. Both sides initially exchanged punts before the Cardinals managed to drive the ball with a balance of passing and running plays that led to Ryan Surry going in from the two-yard line. Chris Hunt kicked the PAT to give Bath an 8 - 0 edge. Both defences picked in a very even and tight game and the first quarter closed with the Cardinals' Chris Taylor snaring a wayward pass and put them in good field position.
A few plays later, early in the second Surry went in from the four to notch his second score of the afternoon and Hunt once more secured the extra two points as Bath eased into a 16 - 0 lead. The Blitz stormed back through Chris Onyliogwu who repeated his fete of previous weeks as he made his way into the end zone from around sixty yards out and to reduce the arrears to 16 - 6.before the half expired.
Lorne Mayers powered his way into the end zone from short distance during the third and with the extra two points being good the London side were only 16 - 14 down. The Blitz continued with their power running game, but fierce Bath defense managed to force three fumbles and keep the home side out of the end zone.
Cardinals' QB Mike Cottrell eased the pressure in the fourth with a 32 yard keeper, but the Blitz defense managed to apply pressure to stop the crucial two point kick and set up a nervous final three minutes. The London outfit drove the ball and seemed to have scored with less than two minutes to go only to see it nullified by a holding call .
Once again the Blitz provided a superb game of football and ran the Southern Conference favourites close in a wonderful advert for youth football.
