Lancashire Wolverines 28 v 38 North Lanarkshire Rams
The Rams maintained the Scottish clubs total domination of their English colleagues in the final Northern
Conference clash of the season. The victory clinches the final play off berth for the Rams, the third
consecutive season they have been there.
The Wolverines put themselves in the driving seat when David Mead hit Sam Fogg in the end zone to open the
home side’s account. With the two point conversion being unsuccessful the Wolverines held a 6 – 0 lead at
the end of the first quarter
The Rams, who have the ability to score from anywhere on the field, bought themselves back into the game,
when Jamie McCoy hauled in a pass from Kevin McElhinney to level the scores. As the game moved deep into
the second period Alan Davidson scooped up a fumble to give the visitors a lead they were never to
surrender. With the two points again being unsuccessful the Rams ended the half with a 6 –12 advantage.
The Rams took the game by the scruff of the neck in the third, reeling off sixteen unanswered points.
Adam Donaldson darted in to score his customary touchdown and the McElhinney to McCoy combination notched a
further six points. With both touchdowns being converted the North Lanarkshire outfit cruised to a
comfortable 6 – 28 lead by the end of the third period.
With their play off spot in danger of being taken away the Wolverines stormed back. Fogg latched onto a
Mead strike to score his second of the day and Jonathan Kohler caught a Mead pass to add the extra two.
Fogg then collected a Ram’s punt on his own forty and outpaced the Rams to score a blistering touchdown to
bring the score back to 20 – 28. Donaldson eased the visitors’ fears when he scampered in to score again.
With the kick being successful the Rams padded their lead to 20 – 36. Greg McIntyre then downed Fogg in
Lancashire’s end zone to record a safety and pad the advantage to 20 – 38. With the game entering the dying
seconds Fogg once again weaved his magic, collecting another punt and sprinting fifty-five yards to pay
dirt. With Marc Liptrot nailing the extra two, a thoroughly entertaining game saw the Rams claim a
well-deserved victory.
The Wolverines will take on the Glasgow Tigers in the Plate playoff next week, while the Rams travel to
their old rivals Clyde Valley Hawks for a spot in the championship game.
