North Lanarkshire Rams 32 v 28 Glasgow Tigers

This game serves to show how close the top four sides are in the Northern Conference with them all capable of knocking each other over in close and competitive games.

The Tigers got off to the best start possible with Darren Banks blasting his way to the end zone from sixty-three yards with the opening play from scrimmage. Raef Shammugan ran in the extra points for the Tigers to extend their early advantage. The Rams however were not to be outdone and clawed their way back into contention with a thirteen yard pass from Kevin McElhinney to Bryan Gall for a score and leave the score at 6 – 8 at the end of the first quarter.

Although both sides moved the ball in the second neither side could bridge defiant defenses until the Rams drove to the one-yard line and Adam Donaldson dived in for North Lanarkshire’s go ahead score. With the Rams failing to convert the extra two points the half ended with a narrow 12 – 8 lead to the visitors.

A three yard burst by Banks with Shammugan adding the extra points pulled the Glasgow side back into a 16 –12 lead in the third and with Banks again going in from close yardage in the fourth the Tigers looked well in control as they moved out to a 22 – 12 lead. The Rams doubled their efforts and Alex Campbell latched onto a twenty-three yard pass from Kevin McElhinney to bring the score back to 22 – 18. A two yard scamper by Donaldson for a further six points and a McElhinney forty yard strike to Campbell with Donaldson sprinting in for the extra two saw the Rams reel off twenty unanswered points and put them back in the driving seat at 22 –32. With Craig Wilson hitting Derek Russell from six yards out the Tigers were once again closing in at 28 –32 but could not find the killer blow.

The Rams travel to Lancashire Wolverines next in a game which will decide who goes into the play offs while the Tigers who are a much better side than their 3 - 3 record shows will go onto qualify for the plate competition.
