Bath Cardinals 34 v 6 London Blitz

The Cardinals closed their regular season with a flourish as they saw off the Blitz in a well-spirited game. The victory secures second place in the Southern Conference for Bath who have only lost one regular season game in the last two years.

Chris Turner opened the scoring for the home side with a five yard burst but with the extra points attempt being no good the Cardinals had a 6 – 0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Blitz came back strongly through a twenty yard blast early in the second from Ariel Mofondo to level the scores and spur the Cardinals into action. Matt Jenkins waited for his blockers before spurting a little over fifty yards to restore Bath’s six-point advantage. With Tom Evans then outpacing the visitors on a sixty-six yard punt return for a score, the Cardinals eased themselves into a comfortable 18 – 6 lead at the half.

Henry Allen finished off the Cardinals drive of the third quarter with a three-yard keeper, and with Chris Hunt booting the extra two they stretched their lead to 26 – 6 as the third quarter concluded. Peter Rigby finished the afternoon’s scoring with a stunning forty-eight yard dash to the end zone with Hunt once again nailing the extra two-point kick as the Cardinals cruised to a victory, the margin of which, failed to show the skill and commitment of an excellent Blitz side.

Bath will now travel to Bristol to determine who represents the south in this year’s championship game while the Blitz will take on the competitive new boys in Kent Brewers for a place in the Plate Final.
