Glasgow Tigers 14 v 22 Clyde Valley Hawks

National Champions Clyde Valley got back to winning ways with a close and hard fought victory against the Glasgow Tigers whose improvement continues.

With defenses very much on top in the first quarter neither side could find their way into the end zone. The Hawks finally broke the deadlock in the second period when Quarterback Ben Hann connected with Tam Chapman from nine yards out. The latter then kicked the extra two points to give the visitors an 8 – 0 advantage. The Hawks continued to apply pressure throughout the quarter and stretched their lead when Gary Clark scampered home from eight yards. A determined Tiger defense blocked the conversion attempt but the champions looked in control of a tight game as the half drew to a close.

The Tigers clawed their way back into contention in the third when William Baxter latched onto a Craig Wilson two-yard pass for six points. Derek Russell slotted home the extra two points to bring the home side back to 8 –14.

A thirty-three yard strike from Wilson to Russell bought the Tigers level in the fourth and with the extra points attempt being unsuccessful the game moved to its climax. With under two minutes to go Hann broke a tackle in his own backfield, avoiding the sack, and dashed forty-one yards to kill off the Tigers’ revival. Chapman added the final nail when he slotted home the extra two.

The result still leaves the Hawks very much in contention for home field advantage in the playoffs. They will however be without the services of Graeme McMillan who is off to the States to try his hand at high school football over there.
