Clyde Valley Hawks 8 v 22 North Lanarkshire Rams
The Rams finally laid their play off bogey to rest. Earlier this season they became the first side to beat
the National Champions in three years. They still remain so, but they can now claim to be the only team to
have defeated them in the play offs as well.
The Hawks took the early lead thanks to Glen Chapman forcing a fumble on the Rams twelve. Three plays later
Gary Clarke barrelled his way into the end zone from three yards out. Tam Chapman ran in the extra two as
the Hawks looked to be establishing control of the game. Both defenses managed to blot out their opposition
as the first quarter concluded. The second period saw much of the same, but the Rams appeared to be growing
in confidence and with the Hawks maintaining their 8 – 0 advantage at the half the game still looked wide
open.
The sides exchanged possession twice more in the third before Kevin McElhinney threw a nine-yard strike to
Blair McTague. Paul McGovern nailed the extra points to bring the sides level at 8 – 8. The Hawks drove
themselves into field goal range on their next drive only for the kick to fail. North Lanarkshire took their
opportunity when Adam Donaldson blazed his way into score from sixty-seven yards out. With the extra points
attempt being unsuccessful the Rams closed the third quarter with a 16 – 8 lead.
The game continued to remain tight in the fourth until the Rams went on a six-play drive for twenty-seven
yards, culminating in danger man Donaldson scampering in from the three. Ross Graham clawed in the two-point
pass to seal a memorable Ram victory in an excellent game of youth football. The Hawks can take some comfort
from the fact that they head the Northern Conference and like their Southern counterparts fail to make the
championship game.
